Camponotus pennsylvanicus – Eastern Black Carpenter Ant Queen
Ready to start your own ant colony? Camponotus pennsylvanicus, commonly known as the Eastern Black Carpenter Ant, is one of the most iconic and beginner-friendly ant species in North America. Known for their large size and slow, steady growth, these queens are perfect for patient hobbyists looking to observe colony development over time.
Care:
Keep the queen in a test tube setup with water and cotton for humidity. Store at room temperature and avoid direct sunlight. These ants require diapause (winter cooling) for 2–3 months at around 5°C to maintain long-term health and colony success.
Feeding:
While founding, the queen doesn’t need food until her first workers (nanitics) arrive. Once workers are present, offer small insects like fruit flies or crushed mealworms, and sugar sources such as honey-water or hummingbird nectar.
Growth:
This species starts slowly—expect a small number of workers in the first year, with growth accelerating in the second season. Colonies can eventually grow into the thousands with proper care and time.
Perfect for antkeepers looking to raise a native species with fascinating behaviors and impressive size.
